Call for Presentations
American Classical League Institute
June 25-27, 2020

Come to Charleston, SC, for the American Classical League 73rd Annual Institute.  Our host is the College of Charleston.  The home of the Classics Department is Randolph Hall, a neoclassical building built in the 1820s. Greek is on the front entrance to campus, Latin on the back. Come join us as we examine the many influences of Classical antiquity in Charleston itself and throughout our world today. We welcome proposals on:

  • Assessment and feedback
  • Civilization, archaeology, history, and culture
  • Classical reception
  • Innovative use of technology
  • Latin and Greek Literature
  • Outreach
  • Research on language acquisition and instructional effectiveness
  • Standards-based instructional design
  • Teacher preparation and Professional development
  • Teaching young students

The special theme for this year’s Institute is "Race, Slavery, and Classics: Learning from the Past, Looking to the Future."  We hope to see submissions that address the notion of race in the ancient world, conditions of slavery in antiquity, the role of classics in both the defense of slavery and its abolition, creating an inclusive classroom, as well as the re-formulation of classics as a discipline and how we express its relevance to a global, diverse, networked future.

The campus is in the heart of the historic district of Charleston, just blocks away from museums and multicultural culinary experiences.  For more information about Charleston, go to https://www.charlestoncvb.com/.

Pre-Institute workshops are either three or six hours long. Pre-Institute proposals are due December 15, 2019.

Institute sessions can be 30, 60, or 90 minute sessions.  Formats include presentation, panel presentation, product presentation, workshop, round table discussion, or poster presentation. Institute proposals are due January 15, 2020.

The Program Committee uses this evaluation rubric when considering submissions.
