NJCL Packet Award

For more than 55 years, the National Junior Classical League Convention has been the culmination of the JCL experience.  The 2011 Convention at Eastern Kentucky University will be no different.  From July 25th to July 30th, more than 1,500 students of all ages and backgrounds will flock to Richmond, Kentucky, to engage in competition, meet fellow students from across the United States, celebrate spirit themes, and revel in the Classics.

Unfortunately, though, many students interested in attending the NJCL Convention cannot do so because of the convention's high cost.  To combat this problem, the 2005 NJCL officers created the NJCL Convention Packet Award, a scholarship based on both need and merit, which was awarded to one NJCL Convention delegate for the full cost of the convention packet.  For five years, the Packet Award has enabled dedicated members of the Junior Classical League who would not normally be able to attend the convention to participate in this extraordinary JCL experience.  This year, the NJCL officers would like to extend the same opportunity to deserving applicants across the United States.

All components of the Packet Award Application must be submitted in their entirety by April 1, 2011.  While the required portions of the application must be submitted via e-mail to officers@njcl.org, students may also submit supplementary materials, including a maximum of two letters of recommendation, to the NJCL President via U.S. mail.  The application requires three short response essays from each applicant.  Since the Packet Award is both a need- and merit-based scholarship, students should be careful to detail their contributions to the Junior Classical League and demonstrate financial need for the scholarship.
